Aust-Bred Duo Quinellas SAf Gr1

Monday, 20th July 2009

Overnight in South Africa, Australian-breds captured a Gr1 quinella when 5YO gelding Our Giant (Giant's Causeway-Macrosa, by McGinty) blitzed his opposition by 4.25-lengths to win the R600,000 (A$93,200) Gr1 Mercury Sprint (1200m) at Clairwood in Durban. Our Giant (ridden by Anton Marcus for trainer Charles Laird) defeated Australian-bred 3YO gelding Sharks Bay (Canny Lad-Pyramisa, by Marauding) & 5YO gelding Extinct (Spaceship-Endangered Species, by Sapieha). A half-brother to Singapore's boom sprinter Rocket Man, Our Giant (a $480,000 yearling consigned by Tyreel Stud at the 2005 Magic Millions Premier Sale on the Gold Coast) took his record to 12 wins (also including March's Gr2 Hawaii Stakes over 1400m at Turffontein, 2008's Gr1 Horse Chestnut Stakes over 1600m at Turffontein & 2007's Gr2 November Handicap over 1600m at Turffontein) & 12 placings (including January's Gr1 Queen's Plate over 1600m at Kenilworth, plus 2008's Gr1 J&B Met over 2000m at Kenilworth & 2007's Gr1 Steinhoff Summer Cup over 2000m at Turffontein, Gr2 Astrapack over 1900m at Greyville, Listed Hyperion Handicap over 1400m at Turffontein & Listed Darley Arabian Open over 1900m at Clairwood, as well as 2006's Gr2 Dingaans over 1600m at Turffontein) from 30 starts. Runner-up Sharks Bay (an $80,000 yearling consigned by Attunga Stud at the 2007 Magic Millions Premier Sale on the Gold Coast) took his record to 4 wins (also including last month's Gr2 Post Merchants over 1200m at Greyville) & 4 placings (including 3rd in last month's Gr2 KZN Guineas over 1600m at Greyville) from 9 starts.
