Racing Victoria Considers 30-Minute Breaks & Immediate Payouts

Monday, 20th July 2009

Racing Victoria Limited is believed to be considering the introduction of 30-minute breaks between races & paying winning bets almost immediately after the field has passed the post, according to the Sydney Morning Herald. RVL has established a working party led by former Moonee Valley executive Fred Fox to examine the changes. The new system would rely on stewards telling betting operators to withhold payouts if they believed an inquiry could affect the result of a race. Victoria's chief steward Terry Bailey voiced some reservations about the plans: "That's putting a bit of pressure on a day at the races," Bailey said. "We've been trialling 30-minute gaps every Tuesday to see if it is feasible...I do have concerns of paying out on a race as the horses hit the line because there'll be instances where confusion could come about if a protest is lodged and is successful and I'd hate to see the day we have to pay out twice on a race."
