Fasig-Tipton 1: US$400,000 Birdstone Colt

Tuesday, 21st July 2009

On Day-1 of the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July Sale a colt by Birdstone (Grindstone-Dear Birdie, by Storm Bird) fetched the top price of US$400,000 when knocked down to John Ferguson, acting on behalf of Sheikh Mohammed. The colt (out of Seattle Slew mare Slew Smarts) was the only yearling in the sale by Birdstone, sire this season of Gr1 Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird. According to bloodhorse.com, Ferguson commented after the purchase: "This was a very nice colt and Birdstone has blasted onto the sire scene with two classic winners. He is a sire who can do it. This was a very athletic horse so it made sense to follow through. He was a very balanced and correct horse." No key overall figures pertaining to the sale have been released yet by Fasig-Tipton.
