Racing Fans To Pick Next Hall Of Fame Legend
The Australian Racing Hall of Fame has announced racing fans are invited to vote for the next Hall of Fame inductee to be elevated to the status of 'Legend'. Chairman of the Selection Panel Bryan Martin commented: "To reach Legend status in any sport is the ultimate compliment and in 2007 and 2008 we welcomed two giants of the turf in Phar Lap and Bart Cummings....This year, in a new approach to involve Australian racing fans, we introduce four racing icons for them to choose from." To vote, fans must call 1300 MY LEGEND (1300 69 53 43 63). The four finalists are:
- Makybe Diva: Champion race mare, won 3 successive Melbourne Cups in 2003/04/05. Rated the best stayer in the world in 2005 and earned a record $14,526,685 in prize money.
- Carbine: Champion race horse, won the 1890 Melbourne Cup, 2 Sydney Cups, 2 VRC Champion Stakes, 3 VRC All-Aged Stakes and 3 AJC Plates.
- Scobie Breasley: Jockey - winner of four Caulfield Cups in succession between 1942 and 1945 & a 5th win in 1952. Winner of the English Jockeys' Premiership four times and his career total of 3,251 winners included more than 2,000 in England.
- Tommy (TJ) Smith: Trainer - Won the Sydney Trainers' Premiership every year between 1953 and 1985. Smith won 2 Melbourne Cups, 4 Caulfield Cups, 7 Cox Plates, 6 Golden Slippers, 35 Derbies and a total of 279 Group 1 races. Trained Tulloch & Kingston Town.
