Aust Jockey Currie Wins Mauritius Derby

Wednesday, 29th July 2009

In Mauritius, Australian jockey Luke Currie won the Mauritius Derby Cup (1600m) at Champ de Mars with a victory in the Mauritius Derby Cup (1600m) on 4YO gelding The Cardinal (Grey Eminence-Silken Treasure, by Al Mufti) for the Guy Fok stable. Currie was riding at his 1st meeting since returning to Mauritius as a replacement for fellow Australian hoop Danny Nikolic (who had been The Cardinal's jockey before having his contract cancelled by the Fok stable last month after a much-publicised clash with stewards); meanwhile The Cardinal (bred by Gary Player Stud in South Africa) notched his 4th successive victory for trainer Budeshwar Gujadhur to take his record to 9 wins & 11 placings from 24 starts. In 2nd place was fellow 4YO gelding Captain's Knock (Parade Leader-Caughtintheslips, by Caesour) ridden by former leading Sydney jockey Shane Dye (currently joint-leader in the Mauritius jockeys premiership).
