Thursday, 30th July 2009

In the UK overnight, former Coolmore shuttler & Gr1 English Derby winner Galileo (Sadler's Wells-Urban Sea, by Miswaki) added a Gr1 triumph when Irish-bred colt Rip Van Winkle (Galileo-Looking Back, by Stravinsky) scored a 2.5-lengths victory against older rivals in the £300,000 (A$602,000) Gr1 Sussex Stakes (8 furlongs) on the 2nd day of the Glorious Goodwood carnival. Favourite Rip Van Winkle (ridden by Johnny Murtagh for trainer Aidan O'Brien) defeated multiple Gr1-winning fellow Irish-bred 4YO entire Paco Boy (Desert Style-Tappen Zee, by Sandhurst Prince) & multiple Gr1-winning US-bred 3YO filly Ghanaati (Giant's Causeway-Sarayir, by Mr Prospector). At his previous start, Rip Van Winkle finished runner-up against older rivals in the UK Gr1 Eclipse Stakes (10 furlongs) at Sandown Park on July 4 & last season he won Ireland's Gr3 Tyros Stakes (7 furlongs) at Leopardstown.
