Laurel Guerreiro Wins Japan Gr1 Sprinters Stakes

In Japan, 5YO entire Laurel Guerreiro (King Halo-Big Tenby, by Tenby) snatched victory by a nose in the ¥202,350,000 (A$2.58m) Gr1 Sprinters Stakes (1200m & 6th leg of the 8-race 2009 Global Sprint Challenge) at Nakayama. Laurel Guerreiro (ridden by Shinji Fujita for trainer Mitsugu Kon) defeated fellow 5YO entire BB Guldan (Chief Bearhart-All The Chat, by Westminster) & 5YO mare Kanoya Zakura (Sakura Bakushin O-Woodmans Chic, by Woodman); Australian 5YO gelding & GSC series leader Scenic Blast (Scenic-Daughter's Charm, by Delgado) finished last in the field of 16 (he was the only foreign-trained horse in the race) while Australian-bred & Japanese-trained 6YO entire Kinshasa No Kiseki (Fuji Kiseki-Keltshaan, by Pleasant Colony) finished 12th. Laurel Guerreiro took his record to 5 wins (also including March's Gr1 Takamatsunomiya Kinen over 1200m at Chukyo, plus 2008's Gr3 Hankyu Hai over 1400m at Hanshin & Gr3 Shinbun Hai over 1600m at Tokyo) & 9 placings (including March's Gr3 Hankyu Hai over 1400m at Hanshin & 2008's Gr2 Mainichi Broadcast Swan Stakes over 1400m at Kyoto, plus 2007's Gr1 NHK Mile Cup over 1600m at Tokyo, Gr3 Arlington Cup over 1600m at Hanshin & Gr3 Sho Shinzan Kinen over 1600m at Kyoto, as well as 2006's Gr1 Asahi Hai Futurity Stakes over 1600m at Nakayama, Gr2 Daily Hai Nisai Stakes over 1600m at Kyoto & Gr3 Hakodate Nisai Stakes over 1200m at Hakodate) from 26 starts for ¥482,480,000 (A$6.152m) earnings.
