Sea The Stars Wins French Gr1 Arc De Triomphe

Tuesday, 6th October 2009

Former Darley shuttler Cape Cross (Green Desert-Park Appeal, by Ahonoora) added a Gr1 triumph when boom Irish-bred 3YO colt Sea The Stars (Cape Cross-Urban Sea, by Miswaki) notched his 6th successive Gr1 victory of the season with a 2-lengths victory against older rivals in the €4 million (A$6.8m) Gr1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (2400m) at Longchamp in Paris. Favourite Sea The Stars (ridden by Mick Kinane for trainer John Oxx) defeated Irish-bred 6YO entire Youmzain (Sinndar-Sadima, by Sadler's Wells) & UK-bred 3YO colt Cavalryman (Halling-Silversword, by Highest Honor). At his previous start, Timeform announced Sea The Stars (a half-brother to Gr1-winners Galileo, Black Sam Bellamy & My Typhoon) "has joined the list of all-time greats" after rating 140 when easily defeating older rivals in September's Gr1 Irish Champion Stakes (10 furlongs) at Leopardstown; & in August he smashed the track record in winning the UK Gr1 Juddmonte International (10.5 furlongs) at York. In 3 earlier starts this season, Sea The Stars returned from a 7-months spell to win England's Gr1 2000 Guineas (8 furlongs) at Newmarket in early May, then followed-up with victories in both June's Gr1 English Derby (12 furlongs) for 3YOs at Epsom Downs & July's Gr1 Coral-Eclipse Stakes (10 furlongs) at Newmarket. Overall Sea The Stars now has 8 wins (also including 2008's Irish Gr2 Beresford Stakes over 8 furlongs at The Curragh) from 9 starts for €4,605,248 (A$7.829m) earnings.
