Summer Bird Wins US Gr1 Jockey Club Gold Cup

In the US, this season's Classic-winning colt Summer Bird (Birdstone-Hong Kong Squall, by Summer Squall) made it 2 successive further Gr1 triumphs with a 1-length victory against older rivals in the US$750,000 Gr1 Jockey Club Gold Cup (10 furlongs) at Belmont Park in New York. Summer Bird (ridden by Kent Desormeaux for trainer Tim Ice) defeated fellow 3YO colt Quality Road (Elusive Quality-Kobla, by Strawberry Road) & 4YO entire Tizway (Tiznow-Bethany, by Dayjur). At his previous start, Summer Bird won August's Gr1 Travers Stakes (10 furlongs) at Saratoga; & earlier this season he won June's Gr1 Belmont Stakes (12 furlongs) at Belmont Park & finished 3rd in April's Gr2 Arkansas Derby (9 furlongs) at Oaklawn Park, as well as finishing runner-up August's Gr1 Haskell Invitational Stakes (9 furlongs) at Monmouth Park. Overall Kentucky-bred Summer Bird (whose sire Birdstone also won both the Gr1 Belmont & Gr1 Travers Stakes as a 3YO in 2004) now has 4 wins & 2 placings from 8 starts for US$2,023,040 earnings.
