Foreign Cup Runners 1: Kirklees & Crime Scene

Tuesday, 13th October 2009

Jockey Kerrin McEvoy declared he is "at least as confident" going into Saturday's Gr1 Caulfield Cup as he was last year when he won the race for Godolphin on All The Good. McEvoy rode Kirklees in his final cup hit-out at Sandown yesterday morning & enthused it was "nice work that will top him off for Saturday." Kirklees went from the 1600m with stable-mate Crime Scene: they picked up the pace from the 1400m & finished off strongly in the straight, with Kirklees about a length in front. McEvoy noted Kirklees goes into the race with "a much better record than All The Good had last year" (when he won at big odds) & summed up: "He's a progressive horse & looks like he's going to be able to take up a forward position." Godolphin's travelling foreman Tommy Strang added Kirklees & Crime Scene (which will run in the Geelong Cup on October 21) had "chilled out" since they arrived in Melbourne. He said both horses were "just under their usual racing weight", but that was no concern because All The Good was the same last year.
