Foreign Cup Runners 3: Changingoftheguard

Tuesday, 13th October 2009

David Hayes has wasted no time in getting Changingoftheguard (formerly trained by Aidan O'Brien) onto the track after his arrival in Melbourne on Saturday. Hayes told the media he was "shocked" at how well Changingoftheguard looked when he saw him on Sunday (for the 1st time in 3 months) & his foreman Gary Fennessy was on hand when the lightly-raced 4YO stepped onto the track for the 1st time yesterday morning. Fennessy said Changingoftheguard (ridden by his handler Lizzie Jelfs) "just had a trot & a look around". Hayes confirmed he will "decide in the next few days" whether to press on for this year's Gr1 Melbourne Cup with Changingoftheguard or run him in the Gr1 Mackinnon Stakes at Flemington on 31 October & wait until next year's 150th anniversary Cup. Hayes summed up: "I'm keeping my options open & we'll just see how he does over the next few days, but we'll keep paying up for him."
