Mushka Wins US Gr1 Spinster Stakes

Tuesday, 13th October 2009

In the US, US$2.4 million 4YO mare Mushka (Empire Maker-Sluice, by Seeking The Gold) won the US$500,000 Gr1 Juddmonte Spinster Stakes (9 furlongs on all-weather) for fillies & mares at Keeneland in Kentucky, after 1st-across-the-line Proviso was relegated to runner-up by the stewards for interference in the straight. Mushka (ridden by Kent Desormeaux for trainer Bill Mott) was duly awarded victory over UK-bred fellow 4YO mare Proviso (Dansili-Binche, by Woodman) & Argentine-bred 6YO mare Teamgeist (Mutakddim-Bavarian, by Southern Halo). Kentucky-bred Mushka (originally a US$1.6 million sale-topper at the 2006 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga August Sale & subsequently a US$2.4 million 3YO filly at the 2008 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale) took her record to 6 wins (also including last start's Gr3 Glens Falls Handicap over 11 furlongs at Saratoga on September 7, plus 2007's Gr2 Demoiselle Stakes over 9 furlongs at Aqueduct) & 5 placings (including Canada's Gr2 Dance Smartly Handicap over 9 furlongs at Woodbine in July, plus May's Gr2 Sheepshead Bay Handicap over 11 furlongs at Belmont Park & February's Gr3 Suwannee River Handicap over 9 furlongs at Gulfstream Park) from 16 starts for US$723,625 earnings.
