Gr1-Winner Orange County Retired After Caulfield Failure

Trainer Brian Mayfield-Smith advised stewards at Caulfield that Gr1-winning 7YO gelding Orange County (Volksraad-Saffie, by Kaapstad) is likely to be retired after finishing last of the 12 runners behind McClintock in the Gr3 Betfair Stakes (1400m). Orange County (a NZ$70,000 yearling at the 2004 NZ Bloodstock Select Sale) recorded 9 wins (also including 2008's Gr1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes over 1400m at Caulfield & Listed Melbourne Food & Wine Plate over 1400m at Flemington, plus 2007's Listed Sofitel Stakes over 1400m at Flemington) & 11 placings (including August's Gr3 Bletchingly Stakes over 1200m at Caulfield & July's Listed Sir John Monash Stakes over 1100m at Caulfield, plus 2008's Gr2 Jayco Crystal Mile over 1600m at Moonee Valley, Gr2 Blamey Stakes over 1600m at Flemington, Gr3 Bobbie Lewis Quality over 1200m at Flemington & Listed Melbourne Stakes over 1100m at Caulfield, as well as 2007's Gr2 Jayco Crystal Mile over 1600m at Moonee Valley & Listed Aurie's Star Handicap over 1200m at Moonee Valley) from 43 starts for $844,875 earnings.
