Mandela Wins Seymour Cup

Monday, 19th October 2009

Ill-fated 1997 Gr1 AJC Australian Derby-winning stallion Ebony Grosve (Grosvenor-Dusky Rosa, by Indian Conquest) added a black-type success when top-weighted 8YO gelding Mandela (Ebony Grosve-Wairongoa Belle, by Sea Anchor) returned from a 7.5-months spell to snatch victory by a short-halfhead in yesterday's $120,000 Listed Darley Seymour Cup (1600m) at Seymour in Victoria. Mandela (ridden by Mark Zahra for trainer Richard Yuill) defeated 5YO entire Pillar Of Hercules (Rock Of Gibraltar-Coat, by Brocco) & favoured 4YO entire Excelltastic (Exceed And Excel-Fantail, by Lear Fan). Mandela (a NZ$1,750 yearling at the 2003 NZ Bloodstock Summer Sale) now has 9 wins (also including 2008's Listed Werribee Cup over 2240m at Geelong, plus 2007's Gr3 Chairman's Handicap over 2020m at Doomben & NZ Listed Evans Classic over 1670m at Pukekohe, as well as 2006's Gr3 Geelong Cup over 2400m & NZ's Gr2 Avondale Guineas over 2000m as a 3YO) & 10 placings (including March's NZ Gr1 Auckland Cup over 3200m at Ellerslie, plus 2007's Gr3 Premier's Cup over 2200m at Doomben & runner-up in the Gr1 NZ Derby over 2400m as a 3YO) from 44 starts for $856,260 earnings.
