Twice Over Wins UK Gr1 Champion Stakes

Monday, 19th October 2009

In the UK, Khalid Abdullah's Juddmonte Farms home-bred 4YO entire Twice Over (Observatory-Double Crossed, by Caerleon) scored a half-length victory in the £350,000 (A$635,000) Gr1 Champion Stakes (10 furlongs) at Newmarket to avenge his runner-up effort in the same race last year. Twice Over (ridden by Tom Queally for trainer Henry Cecil) survived a protest by the runner-up to defeat US-bred fellow 4YO entire Mawatheeq (Danzig-Sarayir, by Mr Prospector) & Sariska 3YO filly (Pivotal-Maycocks Bay, by Muhtarram). Twice Over took his record to 7 wins (also including last start's Listed Foundation Stakes over 10 furlongs at Goodwood on September 23, plus 2008's French Gr2 Prix Eugene Adam over 2000m at Maisons-Laffitte & Gr3 Craven Stakes over 8 furlongs at Newmarket) & 5 placings (including May's Gr1 Lockinge Stakes over 8 furlongs at Newbury & April's Gr3 Earl Of Sefton Stakes over 9 furlongs at Newmarket, plus 2008's Gr1 St James's Palace Stakes over 8 furlongs at Royal Ascot & Gr2 Dante Stakes over 10.5 furlongs at York) from 15 starts for £657,050 (A$1.193m) earnings.
