Cummings & Waterhouse Say "Cut Vic Derby Distance"

Friday, 23rd October 2009

Meanwhile The Daily Telegraph reports Hall-Of-Fame trainers Bart Cummings & Gai Waterhouse “have reignited the perennial debate: should the Gr1 Victoria Derby distance be shortened from 2500m to 2000m?” Cummings & Waterhouse have the new season 3YOs So You Think & Manhattan Rain taking on the older weight-for-age stars in tomorrow’s Gr1 Cox Plate, but neither colt will back-up in the Derby next week. Cummings commented: “I think the Victoria Derby should be 2000m. The number of 2YOs is reasonably high every year & to make them go 2500m at this time of the season is very difficult.” Waterhouse emphasised a Derby start for Manhattan Rain “was never even considered” & noted: “The Derby doesn’t have enough 'sex appeal' - it’s not a stallion-making race.”
