Tuesday, 27th October 2009

There are 42 horses remaining in contention for next week's $5.65 million Gr1 Melbourne Cup (3200m at Flemington on Tuesday 3 November) following yesterday's deadline for 3rd declarations.

  • Veteran trainer Bart Cummings (chasing his 13th Melbourne Cup victory) heads the list with 6 contenders: defending champion Viewed, Roman Emperor & Allez Wonder (who are all guaranteed starts) in the current order-of-entry, plus Think Money, Dandaad & Naval Escort who can join the final field by winning The Lexus Stakes at Flemington this Saturday.
  • High-profile contenders missing at yesterday's deadline included stable-mates Whobegotyou & Maldivian, Irish mare Profound Beauty, Vision And Power, Red Lord & Ready To Lift.
  • Imported stayers Speed Gifted (Lee Freedman) & Changingoftheguard (David Hayes) were both paid up for, as was the Luca Cumani-trained Cima De Triomphe (who needs a top-3 finish in the Gr1 Mackinnon Stakes at Flemington this Saturday to pass the ballot clause).
  • Highest profile runner currently outside the final field of 24 is Gr1 Caulfield Cup 3rd-placed Vigor (currently 29th in the order-of-entry). Immediately above him at 28th is the Luca Cumani-trained Basaltico, while last start Geelong Cup winner Leica Ding is currently 26th.
