Kentucky Tracks Request Big Cut In Racing Dates
In Kentucky overnight, the state's racetracks "requested a greatly pared down live racing schedule for 2010, citing decreases in purses & the local horse population" reported bloodhorse.com. The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission committee received the request (which will be voted on at a further meeting tonight) for 206 racing dates in 2010, down 24.5% from the 273 requested for 2009 (though modifications will bring the actual 2009 total to 239). Turfway Park has asked to race 3-day weeks in January & February (rather than the customary 5) & requested 81 days (down from 114 requested for 2009). Ellis Park is seeking 27 live racing dates (down from 48 days requested in 2009). Churchill Downs (awarded 73 days for 2009) has asked for 62 in 2010. Keeneland's schedule is unchanged with a request for 32 days. Kentucky Downs wants 4 days (down from 6 requested for 2009).
