UK Gr1-Winning Sire Silver Patriarch Dies Aged 15
Meanwhile triple Gr1-winning stallion Silver Patriarch (Saddler's Hall-Early Rising, by Grey Dawn) “has died from natural causes in his paddock at the National Stud in Newmarket” aged 15, reported racingpost.com. Silver Patriarch had been withdrawn from covering duties due to declining fertility earlier this year, after standing the last 2 seasons at Wood Farm Stud in Shropshire. On the track, Silver Patriarch notched 8 wins (including 1997's UK Gr1 St Leger & both 1998's UK Gr1 Coronation Cup & Italian Gr1 Gran Premio del Jockey Club, plus runner-up in 1997's Gr1 English Derby) from 24 starts. He retired in 2000 as the winner of over £900,000 (A$1.62m) prize-money to stand at the National Stud, where he spent 6 seasons before switching to Wood Farm.
