Melb Cup 2: Vet Examinations For 3 Runners

Tuesday, 3rd November 2009

Meanwhile Racing Victoria stewards yesterday conducted veterinary examinations on 3 Melbourne Cup entrants. RV chief vet Dr Paul O'Callaghan visited the stables of Bart Cummings to inspect Viewed & Roman Emperor, plus the David Hayes stable to inspect Changingoftheguard.

  • Viewed (who won last year's Cup) was galloped on when finishing 3rd in last Saturday's Gr1 Mackinnon Stakes. O'Callaghan reported the horse "incurred superficial wounds only to his hind legs" & had suffered "no structural damage" in the incident. He was passed suitable for racing, as was stable-mate Roman Emperor which was also inspected while O'Callaghan was in attendance.
  • However Dr O'Callaghan raised concerns with Changingoftheguard's action at a trot & thus RV stewards ordered "a further examination of the import" this morning. The horse was officially scratched just before 8am this morning.
