Hayes "Insulted" Over Changingoftheguard Scratching
Earlier in the day, leading trainer David Hayes declared he was "insulted" that a panel of 3 Racing Victoria veterinarians ordered the scratching of his Melbourne Cup runner Changingoftheguard following an early morning inspection at the Sandown quarantine centre. Changingoftheguard had been treated for a foot abscess, but Hayes insisted the 4YO entire had recovered & was fit to run. After the Cup, Hayes told the assembled media: "I had the horse trot in front of the TV cameras to show everyone that he was sound. I've never been so insulted in my life. Five leading trainers independently in the huts here (at Flemington) said he was trotting sound & was moving well. Surely you have to give me the benefit of the doubt. It's my call, it's my horse. The horse worked in public for 13 days straight. They get 3 people in that have nothing to do with my stable & take it out on the biggest day of my life." Hayes noted he would not have paid the $45,000 final acceptance fee if Changingoftheguard was lame.
