Vic Stewards Fine Hayes & Brown

Friday, 6th November 2009

Racing Victoria stewards yesterday fined leading trainer David Hayes & Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Corey Brown in the aftermath of Tuesday’s Gr1 Melbourne Cup at Flemington.

  • Hayes pleaded guilty to “insulting behaviour towards RV-appointed veterinary surgeons during the course of their duties” by referring to them as “knuckleheads” during media interviews on Melbourne Cup morning. In assessing penalty, stewards took into account his “guilty plea & unblemished record” & fined him $2,000.
  • Brown was found guilty of “using his whip in an unnecessary manner approaching the winning post when riding Shocking in the Melbourne Cup by hitting the horse down the shoulder during a celebratory gesture”. Brown was fined $500.
