Purple Wins Matriarch Stakes

Monday, 9th November 2009

Former Woodlands Stud & now Darley stallion Commands (Danehill-Cotehele House, by My Swanee) added a group success when favoured & top-weighted 4YO mare Purple (Commands-Lady Viola, by Zabeel) gained the judge’s decision in a 4-way photo-finish to the $300,000 Gr2 Matriarch Stakes (2000m) for mares 4YO & up at Flemington. Purple (ridden by Kerrin McEvoy for trainer Peter Snowden) scored by a short-halfhead from 5YO mare Moment In Time (Archway-Concluding, by Kenny's Best Pal) with a further nose to fellow 5YO mare Lady Lynette (Ladoni-Queen's Own, by Coronation Day). Purple took her record to 6 wins (also including May’s Gr1 Queensland Oaks over 2400m at Eagle Farm & April's Gr1 Vinery Stud Storm Queen Stakes over 2000m at Rosehill) & 5 placings (including last start’s Listed Carsales.com.au Classic over 1600m at Caulfield on October 14 & May’s Gr3 Hidden Dragon Doomben Roses over 2020m) from 16 starts for $871,113 earnings.
