Zenyatta Wins US Gr1 Breeders' Cup Classic
In the US, former Darley shuttler & Gr1 Dubai World Cup winner Street Cry (Machiavellian-Helen Street, by Troy) added a Gr1 triumph when undefeated 5YO mare & 2008 US Champion Older Female Zenyatta (Street Cry-Vertigineux, by Kris S) became the 1st female to win the US$5 million Gr1 Breeders’ Cup Classic (10 furlongs on all-weather) when she notched her 14th successive victory with a 1-length margin over her male rivals at Santa Anita Park in California. Zenyatta (ridden by Mike Smith for trainer John Shirreffs) was tailed-off behind the field of 12 runners in the early stages, but powered home in the straight (from what the course commentator described as “an impossible position”) to sweep past the rest of the field & duly defeat 4YO entires Gio Ponti (Tale Of The Cat-Chipeta Springs, by Alydar) & UK-bred Twice Over (Observatory-Double Crossed, by Caerleon). At her previous 4 starts this year, Zenyatta won October’s Gr1 Lady's Secret Stakes (8.5 furlongs) at Santa Anita for the 2nd successive year, August's Gr1 Clement Hirsch Stakes (8.5 furlongs) at Del Mar for the 2nd successive year, June's Gr1 Vanity Breeders' Cup Handicap (9 furlongs) at Hollywood Park for the 2nd successive year & May's Gr2 Milady Handicap (8.5 furlongs) at Hollywood Park for the 2nd successive year. Kentucky-bred Zenyatta (a US$60,000 yearling at Keeneland in September 2005) is a half-sister to multiple Gr1-winner Balance & was unraced as a juvenile. Overall she now boasts 14 wins (also including 2008's Gr1 Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic over 9 furlongs at Santa Anita, Gr1 Apple Blossom Handicap over 8.5 furlongs at Oaklawn Park & Gr2 El Encino Stakes over 8.5 furlongs at Santa Anita) from 14 starts for US$5,474,580 earnings.
