John Sadler Splits With Lloyd Williams

Tuesday, 10th November 2009

Victorian trainer John Sadler has split with leviathan owner Lloyd Williams & will be replaced by long-time Williams employee Robert Hickmott. Sadler said the break-up “is amicable, but he will delay a decision about pursuing his career as a trainer until next year,” reported The Herald-Sun. Sadler (who left Macedon Lodge yesterday morning after addressing staff in the presence of Williams & son Nick) commented: “Nothing lasts forever & it was time for a change for me & for Lloyd.” Sadler has worked for Williams for nearly 4 years, initially as assistant trainer to Graeme Rogerson before taking control in November 2007. He confirmed there were “signs earlier this year” his partnership with Williams was coming to an end & noted: “It is a fairly intense job working with Lloyd. Three of the 4 years were very good & very successful, but the last 9 months probably hasn't been quite as good.” Sadler (who will take an extended holiday to incorporate his son's wedding in New York early next year, before making a decision about his future) added he still had “a passion for training racehorses” but was unsure whether he would go back to it. He summed up: “Nothing is set in stone as yet. I want to have a bit of a break now & have a think about it. I haven't finished my working career, I can assure you of that, but I am not going to say I am definitely going to train again.” Hickmott, 40, is the son of South Australia-based trainer John Hickmott & follows Sadler, Myles Plumb & Brad Marzato as private trainers for Williams.-
