US Gr1 Mares Retiring 1: Zenyatta
In the US, trainer John Shirreffs told Daily Racing Form undefeated 5YO mare Zenyatta (Street Cry-Vertigineux, by Kris S) will remain at Hollywood Park for several weeks “to be let down & then head to Kentucky to be bred.” Zenyatta became the 1st female to win the Gr1 Breeders’ Cup Classic (10 furlongs) when she notched her 14th successive victory in beating the males at Santa Anita Park in California on the weekend & Shirreffs summed up: “Where else do you go? On the biggest stage in the world, she performs. Isn't it amazing that a horse with her running style (coming from last) is 14-for-14? She's always stepped up.” Kentucky-bred Zenyatta (a US$60,000 yearling at Keeneland in September 2005) is a half-sister to multiple Gr1-winner Balance & was unraced as a juvenile. Overall she boasts 14 wins (also including both the 2008 & 2009 Gr1 Lady's Secret Stakes over 8.5 furlongs at Santa Anita, both the 2008 & 2009 Gr1 Clement Hirsch Stakes over 8.5 furlongs at Del Mar, both the 2008 & 2009 Gr1 Vanity Breeders' Cup Handicap over 9 furlongs at Hollywood Park, both the 2008 & 2009 Gr2 Milady Handicap over 8.5 furlongs at Hollywood Park, plus 2008's Gr1 Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic over 9 furlongs at Santa Anita, Gr1 Apple Blossom Handicap over 8.5 furlongs at Oaklawn Park & Gr2 El Encino Stakes over 8.5 furlongs at Santa Anita) from 14 starts for US$5,474,580 earnings.
