Keeneland Nov Day-1: US$2.05m Swift Temper Buy-Back

Wednesday, 11th November 2009

Owner Mark Stanley made the final bid of US$2.05 million to buy-back dual Gr1-winning 5YO mare Swift temper (Giant’s Causeway-Glasgow’s Gold, by Seeking The Gold) offered as a racing or broodmare prospect & consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency. Stanley told bloodhorse.com: “I guess I got cold feet. Taylor Made did a great job presenting her & Keeneland did a great job getting everybody here, but I just couldn’t let her go when it came time to do it. I might put her in the backyard & just pet her & feed her peppermints. She’s been awful good to us & she doesn’t owe us anything. We’ll probably breed her (in 2010); it’s something we’ve got to take a little time to decide.” Swift Temper won this year’s Gr1 Ruffian Handicap, Gr1 Delaware Handicap & Gr2 Sixty Sails Handicap, as well as 2008’s Gr2’s Gardenia Handicap & Stanley added: “It just didn’t turn out to be the day to sell her. I can’t say I’m completely disappointed. We were going back & forth all week about whether to sell her or not. The bank had a little influence & I’m sure the bank would have liked to have seen her sold. It would have been good to reduce some debt, but our daughter went away to college, so we can’t let both our girls go in the same year. She did get close to her reserve.” Taylor Made’s Frank Taylor commented: “I can understand Mark (Stanley) not selling her; I think she’s the best mare in the sale. But it’s a buyers’ market; it’s not like the old days. Everybody’s readjusting & trying to figure out what everything’s worth again.”
