Mayfield-Smith To Quit Training At End Of November
Melbourne-based trainer Brian Mayfield-Smith announced he will retire from training at the end of November. Back in the 1985-86 season, Mayfield-Smith ended the 33-year reign of Tommy Smith as Sydney’s champion trainer & won 3 successive Sydney premierships, before Smith recaptured the title in 1988-89. Mayfield-Smith subsequently left the Sydney training scene in 1994, when he & wife Maree went to Africa for 2 years to work as wildlife conservationists. He later returned to Australia & established a new training regime in Victoria. Mayfield-Smith told Sky Sports yesterday he was retiring because it was costing “$6,000-a-week” to operate a 20-horse stable. Overall Mayfield-Smith (who has trained for major owners Robert Sangster, Bob Lapointe & Millie Fox) has recorded over 1,000 winners (30+ Gr1-winners) including Marauding, Handy Proverb, Marooned, Diamond Shower, Rubitano, Riverina Charm, Maybe Better, Lyrical Bid, Orange County, Oliver Twist & Sudurka.
