Keeneland Nov Day-2: US$3.1m Honest Pursuit

Friday, 13th November 2009

Meanwhile at the conclusion of Day-2 at Keeneland, Alain Wertheimer from France’s Wertheimer Et Frere (seated with former trainer Alec Head & his trainer-daughter Criquette Head-Maarek) out-bid Greg Goodman (who owns Mt Brilliant Farm in Kentucky) & paid the session’s top price of US$3.1 million for dual-winning 4YO mare Honest Pursuit (Storm Cat-Honest Lady, by Seattle Slew) consigned by Eaton Sales as part of the complete dispersal from the Young family’s Overbrook Farm. Honest Pursuit’s dam Honest Lady is a Gr1-winner & triple Gr2-winner (plus multiple Gr1-placed & US$894,168-earner) & her 2nd dam Toussaud was 2002 Kentucky Broodmare-Of-The-Year who, in addition to Honest Lady, produced Gr1 Belmont Stakes winner Empire Maker & English stakes-winner Chester House. Wertheimer (whose family owns the Chanel perfume manufacturing business) declared the chance to obtain a mare with Honest Pursuit’s pedigree was “a rare opportunity” & noted: “Obviously, if you could buy that kind of family every day, you wouldn’t have to pay that kind of money.” And Overbrook manager of stallion operations Ric Waldman added: “I’m not surprised she brought that price because it is one of the most desired families that no one can buy these days.”
