Legendary US Trainer Bobby Frankel Dies Aged 68
US Hall-Of-Fame trainer Bobby Frankel “who had been battling leukemia for most of the year” died at his home in Pacific Palisades in California overnight aged 68, reported bloodhorse.com. Frankel (who gained his licence in 1966) won 5 US Eclipse Awards as outstanding trainer & was the 2nd trainer in North American racing history to reach US$200 million in racetrack earnings. Frankel (whose star gallopers included Ghostzapper, Bertrando, Empire Maker, Ginger Punch, Aldebaran, Intercontinental, Leroidesanimaux, Possibly Perfect, Ryafan, Squirtle Squirt, Wandesta, Ventura, Tinners Way & Pay The Butler) was also the trainer for Juddmonte Farm’s American operation & in 2003 set the world record for most Gr1 victories in a single season (25) which still stands. Overall Frankel notched 3,654 wins from 17,657 starters in North America for US$227,947,775 earnings (2nd on the all-time list behind D. Wayne Lukas).
