Starspangledbanner Targets Royal Ascot

Tuesday, 17th November 2009

In Australia, Gr1-winning 3YO colt Starspangledbanner (Choisir-Gold Anthem, by Made Of Gold) is being set for a sprinting campaign next year, hopefully culminating in a trip to England’s Royal Ascot in June reported The Herald-Sun. Starspangledbanner (a $120,000 yearling at the 2008 Inglis Premier Sale in Melbourne) made it 4 wins from his last 5 starts in winning last month’s Gr1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield to take his overall record to 5 wins (also including both August's Gr3 McNeil Stakes over 1200m at Caulfield & Listed Vain Stakes over 1100m at Caulfield, plus 2008's Inglis Juvenile over 1000m at Moonee Valley) & 2 placings (including February's Gr3 Arrowfield Stud Blue Diamond Prelude over 1100m at Caulfield) from 9 starts for $1,029,075 earnings. Starspangledbanner is set to return in February, with the Gr1 Lightning Stakes (1000m) at Flemington as his initial target, but Troy Corstens (son of trainer Leon Corstens) confirmed: “We'd really like to take him to Royal Ascot for the Gr1 King's Stand Stakes (5 furlongs) & Gr1 Golden Jubilee (6 furlongs). We've spoken to the people at Royal Ascot. We think it would really suit him.”
