Triple-Winning UK Colt Joins Bailey Bris Stable

Tuesday, 17th November 2009

Khalid Abdullah's Juddmonte Farms UK-bred & Henry Cecil-trained 3YO colt Cloudy Start (Oasis Dream-Set Fair, by Alleged) “will join the Brisbane stables of Trevor Bailey next year after being sold to Australian interests late last week,” reported racenet.com.au. Cloudy Start, who boasts 3 wins & 4 placings from 11 starts for £34,545 (A$62,000) earnings, “has been purchased by Australian Bloodstock’s Luke Murrell in conjunction with Melbourne racing writer Michael Sharkie”. Murrell explained the syndicate “looked at the way top trainers Lee Freedman & Chris Waller went about their European purchases” before making an offer for Cloudy Start & noted: “We looked at the ratings of the horses they bought & the prices they paid to get a guide on what to expect. Henry Cecil gave this horse a really strong wrap & one of the attractive things was his turn-of-foot, which you need to look for before buying a European horse.” Cloudy Start carries a Timeform rating of 109 (ahead of Changingoftheguard 107 & Speed Gifted 105 when they arrived in Australia) & Murrell added: “It’s also important to note the horses Freedman & Waller bought have actually held their rating or increased their rating since getting to Australia. Cloudy Start is lightly-raced & the beauty of him is he’s still developing.” Cloudy Start will campaign in Dubai, before heading to Australia to aim at races like the Gr1 Doomben 10,000 or Gr1 Stradbroke Handicap at the Brisbane winter carnival & “ then the plan is to bring him to Melbourne for next spring.”
