Spinney Wins Gosford Cup

On the track, former Australian Horse-Of-The-Year & 10-times Gr1-winning Woodlands & now Darley sire Octagonal (Zabeel-Eight Carat, by Pieces Of Eight) added a black-type success when Sheikh Mohammed’s 7YO gelding Spinney (Octagonal-Ochiltree, by Twig Moss) scored a half-length victory in yesterday’s $150,000 Listed Gosford Cup (2100m) in NSW. Spinney (ridden by Josh Parr for trainer Peter Snowden) defeated front-running 6YO gelding Barlagarney (Danehill-Sorb Apple, by Kris) & fellow 6YO gelding Enzedex Eagle (High Yield-Gay Finale, by Tenby). Spinney took his record to 6 wins (also including 2006’s Gr2 Autumn Classic over 1800m at Caulfield & Gr2 Alister Clark Stakes over 1600m at Moonee Valley) & 8 placings (including last start’s Gr3 Hawkesbury Gold Cup over 1600m on November 5, plus 2008’s Gr2 Hollindale Stakes over 1800m at the Gold Coast & both 2007’s Gr3 Easter Cup over 2000m at Caulfield & Listed VRC Auckland Cup over 1600m at Moonee Valley, as well as 2006’s Gr2 Feehan Stakes over 1600m at Moonee Valley & Listed JRA Cup over 2040m at Moonee Valley, plus 2005’s Gr3 Sires Produce Stakes over 1600m at Morphettville) from 32 starts for $589,260 earnings.
