Minardi Son Wins Malaysia Gr1 Coronation Cup

Monday, 23rd November 2009

In Malaysia yesterday, Gr1-winning Queensland-based Secret Hill Farms shuttler Minardi (Boundary-Yarn, by Mr Prospector) added a Gr1 triumph when 6YO gelding Kiko's Return (Minardi-Joe's Girl, by Amalgam) reappeared after a 3-months spell to score a half-length victory in the RM700,000 (A$230,000) Gr1 Coronation Cup (1600m) at Perak, after finishing 3rd in this same race last year. Kiko's Return (ridden by Benny Woodworth for trainer Lim Boon Thong) defeated Australian-bred 5YO gelding & stable-mate Blesswithspeed (Brahms-Pottinger, by Al Hareb) & Australian-bred 6YO gelding Triple Luck (Akhenaton-Casual Lies, by Huntingdale). Kiko's Return was passed-in as a yearling for NZ$22,500 at the 2005 NZB Premier Sale, then sold as a 2YO for NZ$28,000 at the 2005 NZB South Island Sale & later resold for NZ$20,000 as a 2YO at the 2005 NZB Ready-To-Run Sale. Previously during 2009, he won April’s Gr1 Selangor Gold Cup (1600m) at Selangor, then finished 3rd in June’s Gr1 Piala Emas Sultan Selangor (2000m) at Selangor & 2nd in August’s Gr1 Perak Derby (2400m) at Ipoh. And during 2008, Kiko's Return also won the Gr1 Perak Derby (2400m) as well as finishing 3rd in both Malaysia's Gr1 Piala Emas Sultan Selangor (2000m) at Sungei Besi in Kuala Lumpur & Gr1 Coronation Cup (1600m) at Perak. Overall he now boasts 9 wins & 8 placings from 21 starts.
