UK Tatts Foals Day-1: $78k Royal Applause Colt

Thursday, 26th November 2009

In the UK overnight, Glenvale Stud’s Irish pin-hooker Ciaran “Flash” Conroy out-bid Yeomanstown Stud's Gay O'Callaghan to pay top-price of 41,000 guineas (A$78,000) for a colt by Royal Applause (out of Cadeaux Genereux mare Three Gifts) during the opening session (& weakest of the 4 sessions) at the 4-day Tattersalls December Foal Sale at Park Paddocks. The colt was consigned by Paul & Sara Thorman's Trickledown Stud on behalf of owner-breeder James Read's Selwood Bloodstock; Read previously purchased Three Gifts for just 10,000 guineas (A$19,000) at the 2006 Tattersalls December Mare Sale & told racingpost.com: “I'm in shock. I only have one other mare, who I bought for 800 guineas (A$1,500) in July, but will be looking for another next week.” Meanwhile Conroy (who indicated the colt will be re-offered next year at Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale) commented: “He was a great mover, a nice individual. The stallion gets plenty of winners & has been lucky for me. I was happy overall with how we got on at the yearling sales this year & the market held up very well considering the world economy.”
