Japan Leg Fracture To US Belmont Star Summer Bird

Monday, 30th November 2009

In a drama-charged lead-up to the Japan Cup, the Japan Racing Association announced star US 3YO Summer Bird (winner of this year’s Gr1 Belmont Stakes, Gr1 Travers Stakes & Gr1 Jockey Club Gold Cup) had been scratched on the morning of the race when “it became clear after his training that the Tim Ice-trained colt has a metacarpus fracture in his right foreleg”. His owner Dr K.K.Jayaraman told bloodhorse.com: “Tim called me & said X-rays had revealed a small chip in the right carpal fetlock joint. It’s only the size of a pea, but he’s obviously out of the race. We will bring him back home in a couple of days & send him to one of the farms in Lexington where we board our horses. After we find out more, we will make a decision whether we remove the chip & try to bring him back or retire him.”
