Jumps Ban Triggers Strong Reactions

Monday, 30th November 2009

Among the headline-hogging comments flooding the media in reaction to Victoria’s jumps ban decision were:

  • Moe trainer Allison Bennett: “To be blatantly honest I am sick of the sudoko-playing boring minority, who largely have no idea about the industry, deciding what we can & can't do. I just can't believe the industry has been so spineless on this issue & it is really time now to take a stand. What happens next? Do the do-gooders attack our 2YO racing. Just because these people play monopoly for excitement, should not mean they control our industry.”
  • Moe Racing Club chief executive David McKinnon: “I just can't believe a decision like this has not been communicated to clubs. All I know about it is what I have read in the wider media. As a jumps-friendly club we are devastated by this decision & we will examine every avenue we have to protest it. There is no doubt this is the result of the vocal minority dictating the outcome.”
  • Country Racing Victoria chairman Michael Caveny: “RV’s charter is to promote & foster racing in this state. Kow-towing to the politically-correct & looney left is not in their charter. RV’s chief responsibility is to the racing industry & its participants. The confidence with which CRV had previously afforded RV is now in jeopardy.”
