Vodka Wins Gr1 Japan Cup

Monday, 30th November 2009

In Japan yesterday, favoured 5YO mare & reigning Horse-Of-The-Year Vodka (Tanino Gimlet-Tanino Sister, by Rousillon) became only the 4th horse in JRA history to notch 7 Gr1 victories (after Symboli Rudolf, T.M.Opera O & Deep Impact) when she scored by a nose in the ¥533,500,000 (A$6.8m) Gr1 Japan Cup (2400m) at Hanshin in Tokyo, after finishing 3rd in this race last year. Former Japanese Derby winner Vodka (ridden by Christophe Lemaire for trainer Katsuhiko Sumii) defeated fast-finishing 4YO entire Oken Bruce Lee (Jungle Pocket-Silver Joy, by Silver Deputy) & 3YO filly Red Desire (Manhattan Cafe-Great Sunrise, by Caerleon). Previously in 2009, Vodka won both May’s Gr1 Victoria Mile (1600m) at Tokyo (by a record margin of 7-lengths & clocking a new race record) & June’s Gr1 Yasuda Kinen (1600m) at Tokyo (to take this race for the 2nd successive year), as well as finishing 3rd in the Gr1 Tenno Sho-Autumn (2000m) at Tokyo on November 1. Overall Vodka overall now boasts 10 wins (also including 2008's Gr1 Tenno Sho-Autumn over 2000m at Tokyo & Gr1 Yasuda Kinen over 1600m at Tokyo, plus 2007's Tokyo Yushun-Japanese Derby over 2400m at Tokyo & Gr3 Tulip Sho over 1600m at Hanshin, as well as 2006's Gr1 Hanshin Juvenile Fillies over 1600m) & 7 placings (including 2008's Gr1 Japan Cup over 2400m at Tokyo, Gr1 Victoria Mile over 1600m at Tokyo & Gr2 Mainichi Okan over 1800m at Tokyo, plus 2007's Gr1 Oka Sho-1000 Guineas over 1600m at Hanshin & Listed Shuka Sho over 200m at Kyoto) from 25 starts for ¥1,333,565,800 (A$16.98m) earnings (the most by a female horse in the Japan Racing Association).
