Plan To Create "Welsh National Stud"
In the UK, businessman & racehorse owner James Potter “has unveiled ambitious plans to create a Welsh National Stud,” reported racingpost.com. Powys County Council “has accepted a bid from Potter (who with his wife Jean owns horses with Philip Hobbs & Richard Lee) to redevelop the 200-acre site of Leighton Park, a Victorian model farm dating from 1848 near Powis Castle in Welshpool”. Potter noted: “It’s a win-win situation, really. Our long-term plan is for the stud to be up & running in 10 years time. In 5 years time we hope to have renovated the dwellings to the way they should be.” He plans eventually to stand 4 good-quality stallions & to offer boarding, foaling & sales preparation services. If Potter's plans for the site are realised, “it will be the largest stallion facility in Wales, leading to it being dubbed by local reporters as a Welsh National Stud, even though the venture is privately financed”.
