Jockeys Assoc Promises To Support Jump Riders

Thursday, 3rd December 2009

Meanwhile Victorian Jockeys Association chief executive Des O’Keefe told Radio Sport 927 that the VJA will fully support the 31 cross-country riders effectively put out of work by Racing Victoria’s decision last week to ban jumps racing at the end of the current racing season (on 31 July 2010). O’Keefe noted: “If we did not support our members all the way under circumstances like this, we would not be doing our job. Of course we will do everything in our power to make sure these 31 members of our association are not left out of work.” And O’Keefe attack arguments used by RV chief executive Rob Hines concerning poor turnover & poor competing numbers in jumps races in recent seasons, declaring: “They are spurious at best, when you consider nothing has been done to help or promote jumps racing. Nobody has invested money into jumping horses because of the insecurity of the game.” O’Keefe confirmed the VJA executive met on Monday night & was waiting for opinions of 2 other directors (currently overseas) before announcing its next steps, explaining: “We will formulate a plan once we have consulted with all of our directors.”
