Sportsbet Not Ready To Start Landmark Court Case
Sportsbet yesterday made its 4th application for an adjournment of proceedings scheduled to commence before Justice Perram in the Federal Court on December 1. Sportsbet’s application (as with the previous 3 applications) was “vigorously opposed by the State Of New South Wales, Racing NSW & Harness Racing NSW. The potentially headline-hogging proceedings have been expedited due to their “very significant impact on the funding of NSW horse racing industries, which in turn affects the income levels & jobs of the 50,000 participants that earn a living from the industry”. The hearing date was set in June 2009. Sportsbet’s barrister told the Court he was not ready to commence or conduct Sportsbet’s case; however during argument, the court “raised concerns about whether Sportsbet had properly resourced its case with the appropriate number of lawyers to prepare a case of such significance”. Justice Perram duly adjourned the hearing until February 5 while:
- ordering Sportsbet to pay the costs of the other parties resulting from Sportsbet not being ready to proceed;
- setting a timetable to ensure Sportsbet’s case is ready to proceed on February 5:
- indicating he is aiming to deliver his judgment by the end of February.
