UK Tatts Breeding Stock Day-4: $118k Danehill Mare To Aust

Friday, 4th December 2009

In the UK overnight, Australian owner-breeder Scott Springett paid top price of 62,000 guineas (A$118,000) for Gr1-winning 13-year-old mare Wannabe Grand (Danehill-Wannabe, by Shirley Heights) during the final session at the 4-day Tattersalls December Breeding Stock Sale at Park Paddocks in Newmarket. The mare (whose initial 6 foals are all winners) was consigned as part of a dispersal of Chippenham Lodge Stud via The Castlebridge Consignment & Springett told racingpost.com: “They don't make Danehill mares any more & she's a Gr1-winner as well. She's empty (not in-foal) so we can take her straight home & she'll probably go to More Than Ready; it's been a successful cross & we hope to get a good 2YO. She's going to Duncan Grimley's Glastonbury Farms, where I now have 22 mares & this is the 1st time I have been here. The mares are different to those back home & the market has been very strong.” Springett (who sold a business printing wine bottle labels) was one of the partners who recently bought Dr Fremantle & the Barry Hills-trained Above Average privately & the pair have both joined Victorian trainer Lee Freedman. Springett noted: “We don't make stayers in Australia, so come here to get the finished product & you'd love to get something that can go for the Caulfield & Melbourne Cups.” Earlier this week Springett also paid 70,000 guineas (A$133,000) for Gr3-winner Theoretically & 42,000 guineas (A$80,000) for New Zealand Gr1-winner Zola.
