Changes To Melbourne Racing Club Races

Friday, 11th December 2009

In racing news from Victoria, Melbourne Racing Club announced the Gr3 Rubiton Stakes (1100m), traditionally run in early January, has been moved to C.F. Orr Stakes Day on February 6. The feature sprint has swapped dates with the Listed Doveton Stakes which has moved to Summer Race Day on January 9. In addition the Rubiton Stakes will now be a set weights & penalties race instead of weight-for-age, while the Doveton Stakes, a handicap race, will change to 1200m from 1100m. Melbourne Racing Club’s Racing Manager John Faulkner commented: “It was made primarily due to the poor fields the Rubiton Stakes has attracted in recent years, more so field sizes rather than the actual field quality. It had also become apparent that changes made in the recent past to other feature sprint races in the period significantly impacted the Rubiton Stakes. It could be said that the Rubiton Stakes at Group 3 provides a better quality lead in to the Oakleigh Plate should horses take that path.” Also changing is the Gr2 Angus Armanasco Stakes which is run on Arrowfield Stud Blue Diamond Stakes Day on February 20; the event will now be run over 1400m (not 1600m) and will be a set weights and penalties race instead of just a set weights race. The reason given for the change is: “The VRC has altered the distance of the Kewney Stakes from 1600 to 1400m two weeks later on Super Saturday at Flemington. The Angus Armanasco Stakes has been a traditional lead-in to the Kewney Stakes in the past.”
