VRC Changes Kewney Stakes

Friday, 11th December 2009

Meanwhile, Victoria Racing Club CEO Dale Monteith announced “a significant VRC race programming initiative in relation to the Club’s feature fillies’ race of the autumn, the Kewney Stakes.” Traditionally run over 1600m for 3YO fillies at Set Weights on Flemington’s Super Saturday in March, (this year run for $300,000), the race will undergo both “a distance and prizemoney change.” As a result the 2010 Kewney Stakes will be run over 1400m for $400,000 on Saturday March 6, with Monteith noting: “The VRC acknowledges the absence of a 3YO Fillies race at Gr1 level below 1600m in Australia, and it will be first to market in seeking to close a discrepancy in the national race program. The new distance and the injection of an additional $100,000 prizemoney into the race will change the dynamic of the Kewney Stakes. In 2011, it is the VRC’s intention to set prizemoney for the event at $500,000.” According to Monteith, “This VRC initiative has met with the support of Racing Victoria Ltd, Melbourne Racing Club and Moonee Valley Racing Club, through which a new lead-up late summer program for fillies has been developed.”
