Champion Jockey Jorge Ricardo Undergoing Chemotherapy

Friday, 18th December 2009

In Argentina, South American jockey Jorge Ricardo announced his temporary leave from race-riding in Buenos Aires during Monday night's racing. Ricardo, the 1st jockey in the world to ride 10,000 winners, is to take an extended break from race-riding to undergo chemotherapy treatment for low-grade lymphoma in his native Brazil, reported blooodhorse.com. Ricardo revealed he was originally diagnosed with low-grade lymphoma two years ago, but said his condition worsened since falling from his mount in the Gr1 Gran Premio Latinoamericano during March in Brazil. "Two years ago I was diagnosed with the disease and was doing well," Ricardo told La Nacion. "But complications arose after the accident in the Latinoamericano and I must undergo chemotherapy." Ricardo may be out for four to five months, but he remains optimistic of a full recovery. To date, Ricardo has ridden 10,570 winners, winning a total of 27 jockeys' titles, and for the past decade has battled it out with Californian-based jockey Russell Baze, who has ridden 10,591 winners.
