Experts Debate Pre-Sale Yearling X-Rays

Friday, 18th December 2009

Thoroughbred Breeders Victoria is inviting all industry participants to hear experts "debate the merits of pre-sale yearling X-rays" in a panel discussion at Melbourne's Moonee Valley racecourse on Thursday October 1 from 6.30-8pm. Ever since x-rays were introduced in 2003 the debate "has raged about their effectiveness in assessing soundness issues in young horses"; 6 years on "it is time to take stock of what has occurred since then & hear from the people that have experienced the system 1st-hand: trainers, veterinarians, auctioneers, bloodstock agents & vendors". Melissa Jackson, principal author of the RIRDC (Rural Industries Research & Development Corporation) report analysing x-rays taken from the sales will present that detailed report, along with Professor Andrew Clark who was instrumental in compiling the data. Panelists include: Simon Vivian (Inglis), Robert Smerdon (trainer for Aquanita Racing) & Dr Kim McKellar (veterinarian). (Sep 17)
