Messara Defends Darley Plan As "Winner For Aust"
Following yesterday's controversial declaration by columnist Ken Callander in The Daily Telegraph that last week's announcement by Darley that 9 of its top Australian horses are being sent to Dubai (to do their future racing there & in Europe) is "raping our top-class horses for the pleasure of the sheiks on the other side of the world", Arrowfield Stud boss John Messara released a statement declaring: "The decision by Darley Australia to send 9 of their 400-plus racing team to Dubai & Europe is a boon for the Australian racing industry. It is the performance of Takeover Target, Miss Andretti, Choisir, Starcraft & the like which has lifted the standing of our Australian industry from a backwater to a respected player on the international scene. Sheikh Mohammed's decision to send these 9 horses to compete internationally can only enhance Australia's profile. We need more of it. It is only by looking outwardly & being creative that our industry can continue to grow. Of note, all of the 9 horses selected have remained in Australia until the end of their Classic year." Messara added: "Let's have an open racing economy here & provide an internationally competitive racing model where horses come in & go out to compete; our industry will only thrive as a result. A passionate industry supporter, Sheikh Mohammed has always put in more than he takes out wherever he becomes involved & we are fortunate that he has chosen to develop a base in this country, where he is already a major investor, owner, employer & sponsor."
