Nicholson Says "Too Much Racing Major NSW Bugbear"
Too much racing "is the major bugbear for NSW, according to the Sydney Turf Club's John Nicholson, one of Australia's most experienced administrators, but the subject was treated with disdain at the summit meeting last week," reported columnist Max Presnell in The Sydney Morning Herald. STC (Rosehill Gardens & Canterbury Park) racing manager Nicholson "has no doubt the problem with Sydney racing on Saturdays stems from the number of metropolitan & provincial meetings". He noted: "We have 123 meetings a year in town & 127 at provincials containing between 37-39% Sydney-trained horses. Melbourne has 119 in town & is considering a drop to 116 or 115. Brisbane has 98 metropolitan meetings." (Jan 20)
