Qld Vet Dies From Hendra Virus

Queensland veterinary surgeon Alister Rodgers has died in Brisbane's Princess Alexandra Hospital "after contracting Hendra virus from the blood of an infected horse" reported The Courier-Mail. Rodgers has been critically ill in a coma for the past 2 weeks, since being exposed to the blood of a horse infected with Hendra virus that died at a stud at Cawarral near Rockhampton on July 28. The stud will remain in quarantine until the end of September. Rodgers & 3 other stud workers were initially treated with anti-viral medication in Rockhampton Hospital; they were later transferred to Brisbane (along with the stud owner) for observation, but none of the others "have so far fallen ill" & those 4 "returned home clear of the disease by Monday".
