Scenic Blast Wins UK Gr1 King's Stand Stakes

Friday, 18th December 2009

Ill-fated former Durham Lodge stallion Scenic (Sadler's Wells-Idyllic, by Foolish Pleasure) added a Gr1 triumph overnight when Australia's multiple Gr1-winning 4YO gelding Scenic Blast (Scenic-Daughter's Charm, by Delgado) became the 4th Australian sprinter in the last 7 years (following Choisir, Takeover Target & Miss Andretti) to win England's £300,000 (A$610,000) Gr1 King's Stand Stakes (5 furlongs) with victory on the opening day of the prestigious Royal Ascot carnival. Scenic Blast (ridden by visiting Australian jockey Steven Arnold for Perth-based trainer Danny Morton) scored by 0.75-length from Irish-bred 4YO mare Fleeting Spirit (Invincible Spirit-Millennium Tale, by Distant Relative) with a further 2.75-lengths to fellow Irish-bred 3YO filly Anglezarke (Acclamation-Welsh Mist, by Damister). Scenic Blast (an $85,000 yearling at the 2006 Magic Millions Perth Premier Sale) took his record to 8 wins (also including March's Gr1 Crown Newmarket Handicap over 1200m at Flemington & January's Gr1 Lightning Stakes over 1000m at Flemington, plus 2007's Gr3 McNeil Stakes over 1200m at Caulfield & Listed Supremacy Stakes over 1100m at Ascot) & 7 placings (including 2008's Gr3 Hyperion Stakes over 1400m at Ascot, plus 2007's Gr1 Coolmore Stud Stakes over 1200m at Flemington, Gr1 Caulfield Guineas over 1600m, Gr2 Karrakatta Plate over 1200m at Ascot, Gr3 Danehill Stakes over 1200m at Flemington & Listed Perth Stakes over 1100m at Ascot) from 18 starts for just under $1.9 million earnings.
